Our Kindergarten artists created this multi-media mural of robins and blue jays on a snowy winter bush. Stop by our Art room to see it in person, until the end of February.
Fifth grade artists explored the idea of creating patterns in concentric circles using tints (hues mixed with white.) I love how each circle design is different!
These fall landscapes of birch trees were painted by our third grade artists. First, they painted the tree trunks and branches using the edge of a piece of cardboard dipped in black tempera paint. Watercolor paints were used to create the beautiful fall foliage and other elements of the landscape.
Paintings by Wassily Kandinsky, "The Father of Abstract Art", were the inspiration for the watercolor paintings created by the third grade artists in the photo below. Just as in the fall landscapes above, the black paint was applied with cardboard first. Then the paintings were finished with watercolors. The technical process was the same for both third grade projects, but the resulting works of art were very different!
Our Second Grade artists created diptychs of a tree in the fall and winter.
These were inspired by the paintings of master artists Vincent Van Gogh and Piet Mondrian.

Our 4th, 5th, and 6th grade artists recently had the opportunity to sketch sea creatures as part of the collaborative program between the Johnson School, Northeastern University's Marine Science Center, and the Nahant Education Foundation. The sea creatures were lent to us by Carole McCauley, Outreach Coordinator or the Marine Science Center. Thank you MSC!
Our 1st grade artists have been exploring the color spectrum. One set of tempera paintings was created with Red, Yellow, and Blue. The other set was created with Magenta, Yellow, and Turquoise. Notice how the colors in the "rainbows" are the same, and how they are different? Hooray! Our young artists have achieved such a high measure of control over mixing their primary colors that they did not create brown! Mix all three primary colors together to make brown.
